Kalon Venture Partners

From complex to distilled using logic and structure.

Kalon Venture Partners is a Section 12J registered venture capital company started in 2016 by a group of entrepreneurs who are well-experienced executives in the South African tech venture capital space. The company raises money from the public, and then invests it, primarily in disruptive start-up companies.

The business had a rather complicated structure. The decision was made to appoint a non-executive independent director in order to strengthen governance.

Sirdar’s due diligence in the form of upfront assessment to ascertain the best fit for the new appointment was done in two parts. Each of Kalon’s directors were profiled using Sirdar’s appointment diagnostic to understand what personality type would be best suited to the vacant position given board dynamics. Having done the same for the prospective candidates, Sirdar’s Appoint team was able to ascertain who should be short-listed, and took the process to completion from there.

The Kalon board was furthermore able to reflect on its performance through the board evaluation that was conducted.

The board was most pleased with the appointed candidate and found the insight from the evaluation remarkable. “It covered the governance and issues facing the company across a very widespread, maybe 30 different aspects including sub-aspects, and so I think we gained good insight into what we are doing well and what we are not doing well. I think the assessment was able to distil our key priorities of things we need to do, in a structured way,” said non-executive director Arnold Basserabie
